When to use Plexiglass as a building material

Acrylic sheeting is often referred to as plexiglass or acrylic glass. It has been around for decades and is a much stronger and safer alternative building material than glass and other plastics. Here are some different ways that plexiglass can replace glass and other material as a durable building material.

Commercial and Residential Windows

Glass has always been the standard for commercial and residential windows. However, in recent years, plexiglass acrylic sheeting has become more popular as businesses and homeowners are more concerned about safety and security. Plexiglass offers the same look and feel as glass but at a much lower cost that will fit your budget. Plexiglass is also much more durable and shatter resistant. This offers an extra layer of protection that traditional glass cannot because can be easily broken.

Skylights

Another great place to replace glass for homes and businesses is skylight construction. Plexiglass has more versatility than glass and can be installed on any type of roof, where glass has some restrictions. Plexiglass acrylic sheeting is also extremely durable against weather and the survivability is much higher than glass. When using plexiglass with a glazing applications, it has a high resistance to smudges and scratches while still maintaining stunning clarity. Acrylic and plexiglass have high thermal values and insulate buildings better than glass, helping to improve the efficiency of your structure.

Secure Facilities

When it comes to security, plexiglass acrylic plays an essential role. Government buildings, ATM’s, detention centers, and other secure facilities use plexiglass to keep the building and people safe. Because it’s much lighter than other materials, plexiglass acrylic is easy to install and is extremely cost effective. It has a very high resistance to damage and abrasions, making it one of the strongest plastics, providing a high level of protection for facilities.

Solar Panels

Similar to other applications, plexiglass is the preferred material for constructing solar panels. Compared to tempered glass, plexiglass holds up better in harsh weather conditions and is more shatter resistant while still allowing 90% of light to pass through it to the solar cells. One of the biggest advantages of plexiglass panels are the ability to easily cut and form them. This is especially important for do it yourself projects.
